Yom Kippur is upon us.

Leonard Cohen's song "Who by fire" is inspired by one of Yom Kippur's central prayers "Unnetane Tokef" meaning, to recite for others the terrible importance of this day.

In this version the opening notes are clearly oriental in style and remind me of the manner my grandfather, Shabtai (Sabetai), a Sephardi Jew from Turkey, would intone the liturgy. He had a beautiful haunting voice.
