Gilad Shalit is coming home ...

Pisa, standing in for Snoopy at Simply Jews, nailed the matter:

" Israel is about to get back a young man who never did anything wrong, a simple citizen of this country. The Palestinians, on the other hand, are going to be flooded with almost one thousand criminals, and good luck building a stable society with that... One simple citizen for us, one thousand criminals for them. We win. "

Tomorrow, by the time I wake up in the morning and turn on the computer, Gilad will have been restored to his family.

I'm puzzled that I find myself so pleased by Gilad Shalit's release. The arguments against negotiating with terrorist are compelling. The statistics regarding the number of Israelis killed by released terrorists are sobering. The hideous crimes of many of those imprisoned would merit a death sentence in many other countries. And these vermin have been released without any guarantees that they will not return to kill again.

Yet, in spite of everything, I'm happy that Gilad is free to return to a normal life. And I'm extremely proud of Israel. Strange, isn't it?

As you know, I'm developing a course on irony. And as I enter more deeply into the subject, I discover that irony is a central element in enlightenment and liberalism, not just a figure of speech. And a society deeply imbued in irony is in effect a qualitatively ethical and strong society. Thus your comment relates to a comment I found on Harry's Place blog and together are a fine illustration of the irony that is Israeli society:

"Nick – as others have pointed out, the IDF (like Israel as a whole) is considerably less formal than what I imagine you’re used to.

I don’t think there are many armies in which immediately after the salute the Chief of Staff would grab the soldier in a bear hug!

That’s Israel. The spontaneous burst of happiness and emotion by hundreds of people who don’t even know Gilad Shalit and yet came to welcome him home is Israel. The fact that the whole nation is glued to the TV watching coverage of the day’s dramatic events and you can hear a pin drop outside is Israel. And the fact that it is possible to be overjoyed for the Shalit family whilst at the same time knowing that there will be more terror attacks and more kidnappings is also Israel."
